Unlocking Circle Tools and Units in AutoCAD for Civil Engineers

Welcome back to AutoCAD Essentials for Civil Engineers blog series. We now shift our focus to drawing circles and understanding units in AutoCAD. These tools are vital for creating precise designs, from circular manholes to curved layouts in civil CAD programs.
Drawing Circles: The Core Methods
Circles are omnipresent in civil engineering basics, whether for structural columns or architectural features. AutoCAD offers several ways to create circles:
1. Center-Radius Method
- Define the center of the circle using coordinates like 3,3, and specify a radius (e.g., 4 units).
2. Center-Diameter Method
- Similar to the radius method but uses diameter values (e.g., 10 units).
3. Two-Point Method
- Draws a circle based on two diametrically opposite points, like 1,1 and 6,1.
4. Three-Point Method
- Specify three points, such as 3,3, 3,1, and 4,2, to create a circle passing through them.
5. Tangent-Tangent-Radius (TTR)
- Use two tangent lines and a radius to form a circle. Perfect for fitting circles in tight spaces in AutoCAD Civil 3D training.
6. Tangent-Tangent-Tangent (TTT)
- Define a circle tangent to three objects, whether they are lines or existing circles.

Understanding Units in AutoCAD
Setting up units correctly is crucial for maintaining consistency in civil engineering tutorials. The UN command brings up the Drawing Units Dialog Box, where you can:
- Choose between metric (decimal) or imperial (engineering) units.
- Set precision levels for lengths (e.g., 2 decimal places) and angles (e.g., degree or gradients).
- Adjust insertion scales to manage drawings imported from other unit systems.
